Dramatist Wichaya Artamat is one of the most promising theater makers in Southeast Asia. During Oslo Internasjonale Teaterfestival 2020, he is presenting the piece This Song Father Used to Sing (Three Days in May), where ancient culture is mixed with contemporary pop-culture and the current political challenges of Thailand.
- How is artistic freedom put at risk, based on the situation in your country of residence, or in general? What are the possible actions to protect artistic freedom?
In my perspective, artistic freedom in Thailand is always at risk. We have some sensitive issues that we cannot question or discuss publicly, so we have to find circuitous way to talk or make art about it. It is sad to say that this kind of self-censorship is in our flesh and blood. In my country, it may be more important to protect physical freedom before artistic freedom.
